Best Made Boot Care

Eli Romer grew up in Eastern Oregon. His father was a carpenter and when his feet were big enough he grew into his father’s Danner work boots. At 18 he took his first job in a local lumber mill and bought his own Danners. Ten years later and Eli is now the quality control coordinator at Danner boots. Although he’s most often found putting the latest Danner offering to the test, he is still known to sport that first pair of Danners. Eli oversees the field testing of all Danner boots and months prior to any new release he has dispatched the prototype for rounds of abuse. Whatever you think you can ladle onto a pair of boots, Eli has seen it.

You may have the money and wits to find the right pair of boots, but are you willing to put the time and effort in to making them last? As true believers in the value of long-lasting tools, and as long-time Danner devotees we turned to Eli for some tips on boot care, and here are some of our notes:

Before you buy make sure your boots fit properly. This may seem painfully obvious but you’d be surprised (especially in the age of online ordering) how many people settle for ill-fitting boots, which in turn wear out irregularly. Note: if you have wide feet then you’ll appreciate that folks like Danner offer a multitude of widths.

Never dry your boots with forced heat (ie- a hair dryer), let them slow dry. If you live in a bog or your boots are exposed to water on a frequent basis then invest in a proper boot drying apparatus.

City streets will wear down a good pair of soles two to three times faster than natural terrain. Note: we’ve heard that New York City sidewalks are the harshest as they incorporate abnormally high quantities of recycled glass into the concrete mix (maybe the local cobblers are in on this).

Don’t wear your boots into the ground past the point of repair. Companies like Danner offer a recrafting service, where you can send your old faithfuls in for repair. In the end there’s only so much a manufacturer or good cobbler can do.

Use a boot oil or conditioner free of animal fat (which will clog up the pores of the leather and leave your boots unbreathable).

Clean, dry, and condition your boots on a regular basis. Dirt in particular will eat through seams and fabric like battery acid.

If in doubt never hesitate to contact your manufacturer. Boots nowadays are often comprised of multiple fabrics and fibers, and it might take some expert explaining to get your boot care routine down just right. People like Eli would love to help add years to the life of your boots.

This was my favorite song of 2011. Being able to hear and see it be performed every night of our fall tour was amazing. With its perfect balance of pretty tones, melodic vocal patterns, sludgy guitars, heavy jams; the song makes me cringe every time I hear it.

Such an amazing song, hope to see them again at some point. Thanks to Ping, he has brought some of my favorite music of the last year.
